Signature Vegan protein blend

Getting enough protein isn’t as difficult for vegans as it perhaps once was, as there are plenty of vegetables and vegan foods readily available out there that contain protein. However, it’s getting all of the protein that your body needs that is a challenge.

Proteins are made up of amino acids - nine of which are essential, which means they can't be made by the human body, we need to get them from food. It’s important to know that proteins from animal products usually contain all of the nine essential amino acids, however there isn’t a single traditional plant-based source available that contains all nine in quantities that are comparable to animal proteins.

When we founded EXALT it was our first aim to create real food that is protein-rich and conveniently bottled - made from only the finest ingredients. We soon developed our signature protein blend and began working on creating a vegan version.

Why our dietitian likes it

Ro Huntriss

I have been vegetarian for over 20 years and I’m a strong advocate for the inclusion of plant-based products within the diet for many reasons including significant environmental benefits. I understand how challenging it can be to get an optimal blend of essential amino acids from plant-based proteins but the EXALT Vegan Protein has done that for us, whilst achieving a tasty flavour, which you don’t always find with other vegan proteins. Even if you don’t eat plant-based all the time, having some emphasis on plant-based dietary products will bring several benefits to you and the planet.

Fitness expert's opinion

Mckenzi Sager

It is important to mix protein sources to prevent intolerance to any one variety. Training, whether its bodybuilding or specific training for an event often involves a lot of food repetition. Mixing up protein sources by adding a plant-based protein is a good way of reducing the chances of an intolerance. I can think of several clients and PT’s alike who have issues with the digestibility of whey so vegan is a good option.

When using it myself I look for the highest quality, best tasting ingredients preferably with mixed plant sources for further diversity. Supplements and training related foods often don’t taste great. Vegan proteins are no exception, often tasting chalky or grainy. EXALT’s is the best of a bad bunch and tastes surprisingly good.

Introducing our signature vegan protein blend

Unlike some of the “earthier” tasting blends out there, we developed a recipe that was not only favourable for its performance abilities, but also taste. However you decide to have it; the combination of pea protein, hemp seed protein, pumpkin seed protein will do the job.

Highest quality ingredients

Totally natural. No freaky stuff

Created by our team of experts

This blend of protein sources contains all of the 9 ‘essential’ amino acids which cannot be synthesised by the body, these ensure the body can repair and grow muscle and provide sustained energy throughout the day.

No-expense-spared ingredients

Our signature triple-release vegan protein blend is flavoured with natural no-expense-spared luxurious ingredients such as Madagascan vanilla & organic raw Cacao from the Congo. This is then blended with the three vegan protein sources.

We then add a touch of ground dates, apple fruit powder, low-GI organic unrefined coconut blossom sugar and Stevia plant extract for a little sweetness.

Combined, these ingredients deliver a natural-tasting luxurious creamy vanilla / chocolate flavour.

Like our signature whey protein, we have sourced only the finest ingredients and have mixed high-quality, plant-based protein from multiple sources to provide not only a varied amino acid profile, but also equally as importantly an exceptional-tasting blend. Once again we have adopted a tri-blend methodology, choosing each protein source based on taste and performance characteristics.

Pea Protein

Made by extracting protein from yellow peas. Naturally vegan, hypoallergenic and easily digestible. It is a high-quality protein and a great source of iron. It also has 4x L-arginine as whey, which is great for healthy blood flow and heart health. We combine the entire blend with a small amount of coconut blossom sugar, date powder and some natural flavouring for a super clean profile.

Hemp Seed Protein

The seeds of the hemp plant have been used in Chinese food and medicine for over 3000 years. With 25% of their total calories coming from protein, it is a great source of protein, interestingly on par with beef and lamb by weight. This is considerably more than similar foods like chia seeds and flaxseeds, whose calories are 16-18% protein. With an earthy, nutty taste it is a great accompaniment to the pea.

Pumpkin Seed Protein

Small but packed full of nutrients. Even in small amounts they can provide you with healthy fats, magnesium and zinc. Pumpkin seeds were a celebrated food among many Native American tribes who treasured them both for their dietary and medicinal purposes. We also like them for their chewy texture along with their subtle sweet, nutty flavour. This rounds out to the protein element of our vegan blend.

Why we made it

Whilst we’re not vegans ourselves, we have always supplemented our regular whey protein (which as you know we have been generally unimpressed with) alongside plant-based proteins in order to achieve a balanced protein intake. However, much of the innovation as it relates to both taste and performance has been undertaken on the more established whey market leaving those wanting a great plant-based protein somewhat lacking.

EXALT’s signature vegan blend does not leave you lacking. We have spent the same amount of time (and money) developing what we consider to be a truly great-tasting protein blend suitable for vegans and non-vegans alike.

What makes it special?

The power of three

Similar to our whey blend, our signature vegan protein blend is formulated using a combination of protein sources to provide a complete protein. The combination of different protein sources allows us to create a complete amino acid profile and stay true to the principles of a balanced diet. We avoid soy since it often contains phytoestrogen, which is suspected of interfering with natural hormone levels.

Pea Protein

Pea protein is thought to have a fast-intermediate digestion time, with the absorption period lasting for up to eight hours, with an approximate digestion rate of 2.4-3.4 grams per hour. Research suggests that pea protein provides similar results to whey protein when considering body composition, muscle thickness and strength.

Pumpkin Seed Protein

Pumpkin seed protein is thought to have a faster release, within 2 hours, supporting fast, efficient muscle building.

Help Seed Protein

Hemp seed protein is thought to be highly digestible although less is known about its digestion time.

Together, all three proteins provide a strong essential amino acid profile with good digestibility, collectively forming a complete protein, perfect for muscle protein synthesis and building and repairing tissues within the body.

Our flavours

We have a real chip on our shoulder about flavour (or lack thereof). In fact, it was a frustration with the lack of healthy, flavourful, convenient and protein-packed options out there that spurred us on to found EXALT in the first place.

That’s why we pride ourselves on being able to offer a range of products that not only pack a nutritional punch, but that also deliver above and beyond expectations when it comes to flavour.

We’ve worked with taste experts from Green & Blacks across our entire range. Check out some of our vegan protein blend flavours below.

Madagascan Vanilla Blend

Premium Madagascan Bourbon Vanilla powder is combined with our signature vegan protein blend of Pea, Hemp and Pumpkin Seed protein to create a smooth, creamy and natural-tasting vanilla flavour.

Each serving contains 20.3g of protein which includes all the naturally occurring essential amino acids from the triple-release protein blend.

Organic Raw Cacao Blend

Premium raw organic Cacao from the Congo is combined with our signature vegan protein blend of Pea, Hemp and Pumpkin Seed protein to create a wonderfully rich yet natural-tasting chocolate flavour.

Each serving contains 20.4g of protein which includes all the naturally occurring essential amino acids from the triple-release protein blend.

The science behind it

Plant-based Produce

Plant-based diets or plant-based dietary choices have become much more popular in recent years due to their known health, environmental, ethical and performance benefits [1]. Research suggests that a plant-based diet can support weight loss, reduce blood sugar levels, cholesterol levels and blood pressure, and potentially reduce the amount of medication needed to treat chronic conditions [2]. In addition to its health benefits, the positive environmental impact from following a plant-based diet is significant: diets that are more plant-based have a lower environmental impact with lower greenhouse gas emissions, energy utilisation and land occupation [3]. The consumption of organic products also has a positive effect on diet-related environmental impacts from diets rich in plant-based foods [3].

Although some plant-based proteins are incomplete, generally lacking one or two of the nine essential amino acids [4], when consumed in combination with other plant-based proteins, as seen in this blend, they can become complete, improving their collective quality, making them a good choice to amplify health and performance benefits [5], whilst reaping the benefits noted above.

Pea protein

Pea protein is an example of a complete plant-based protein due to containing all nine essential amino acids. Pea protein is rich in branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) and has shown itself to be a suitable alternative to whey protein for muscle protein synthesis [6]. Pea protein is lower in the amino acid methionine [7] but is complemented by the other protein sources within the blend to deliver a nutritionally optimal plant-based protein blend.

Hemp Protein

Hemp protein is an increasingly popular complete plant-based protein, considered to have a balanced amino acid profile [8]. In addition, the bioactive compounds within hemp protein have been linked to improved blood pressure, antioxidant activity, blood glucose and blood cholesterol control [8].

Pumpkin Seed Protein

Pumpkin seed protein makes up the last protein component expanding the nutritional formula of the blend. Pumpkin seeds are a good source of magnesium, zinc and potassium, B vitamins [9,10] with antioxidant capacity [11].

Cacao

In addition to its rich, natural flavour, cacao is known for its health benefits due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and has been linked to several health benefits to include reduced risk of heart disease [12], improved insulin sensitivity and immune response [13]. Research also suggests that the polyphenols (antioxidants) in cacao can improve mood, promoting calmness and contentedness [14].

Vanilla

Vanilla is another popular flavour which also brings about its own health benefits. Vanilla has been shown to demonstrate antimicrobial properties [15] and antioxidant action [16] which can help to protect against disease and ageing.

Stevia & Erythritol

Stevia is a natural sweetener derived from a plant which contains no calories with a sweet taste that can be 50-350 times sweeter than sugar. The safety of its consumption is well established [17]. Similarly to Stevia, erythritol is another non-caloric, plant-derived sweetener known for having good digestibility without having any impact on blood glucose or insulin levels [18], so can be useful for anyone with diabetes or for those at risk of diabetes. In addition, erythritol is also known for its antioxidant properties [19].

Swapping sugar for a sweetener enables us to reduce our free sugar and calorie intake whilst retaining the sweet taste, which is in line with Public Health England guidance [20].

Fitness expert's opinion

Mckenzi Sager

The three proteins used in the EXALT vegan protein provide a strong complementary amino acid profile ensuring you can get the most out of the blend in terms of health and performance benefits. This blend will help to manage your hunger and satiety whilst helping to manage your weight. The plant-based blend offers a high-quality vegan alternative to the EXALT Whey Protein Combination.

“The natural sweeteners and flavours used in the EXALT Vegan Protein Blend have been chosen to protect and promote health, whilst not compromising on flavour. Cacao and vanilla both exhibit health-promoting properties, and including natural, non-nutritive sweeteners means we can still enjoy that sweet flavour whilst benefiting from a reduced sugar and calorie intake.”
